Asphalt shingle roof cost calculator
Architectural (dimensional) vs. 3-tab: the price gap is narrower than the lifespan gap. Tell us your home size, pitch, and ZIP and we'll show you what to expect for 2026.
Typical 2026 ranges
- Architectural (dimensional): $475–$850 per square (installed)
- 3-tab (builder grade): $350–$600 per square
- Lifespan: 28 yrs (architectural) vs 18 yrs (3-tab).
Architectural vs. 3-tab: what's actually different
Asphalt shingles dominate U.S. roofing (~80% market share) for a reason: they're the cheapest way to get a fully code-compliant, warrantied roof. But “asphalt shingle” hides two very different products.
- 3-tab: Single-layer, flat uniform look. Wind rating typically 60 mph. Shows its age fast — granule loss starts by year 10.
- Architectural (also called dimensional or laminate): Two layers laminated together. Wind rating 110–130 mph. Depth and shadow lines that mimic wood shake. ~10-year longer lifespan for ~25% more cost.
- Premium/luxury architectural: Thicker laminate (up to 3 layers), 130+ mph rating, 50-year warranties. 40–60% price premium over standard architectural.
When 3-tab still makes sense
Short-term rentals, rental properties you plan to sell in under 5 years, or outbuildings where longevity doesn't matter. Everyone else: architectural is the default.
Asphalt shingle vs. metal — TCO over 40 years
Over 40 years you'll install asphalt roofs twice (~1.4x), vs. metal standing seam once. Metal costs ~2.4x more upfront but comes out roughly even long-term — and you skip the tear-off labor every 25 years.
